Electronic Filing Instructions
- 1). Obtain tax-preparation software and complete your income taxes. Examples of tax-preparation software are TurboTax and H&R Block at Home (formerly TaxCut). You can purchase the software from many retail stores, on the Internet or through the software website. Most preparation software offers free electronic filing. Complete your income tax return and follow the directions to file your taxes electronically.
- 2). Go to a professional tax-preparer and have your income taxes prepared. Elect to have your income taxes submitted to the IRS electronically. Some professional tax-preparers include the cost of electronic filing in the preparation fees.
- 3). Visit the IRS Free File website and prepare your income taxes using a free company. Many companies offer free tax-preparation and electronic filing to taxpayers with an income of $58,000 or less. Click "Browse the List of Free File Companies," and determine the company that suits your financial situation. Follow the instructions to complete your income tax return and electronically file your taxes.
- 4). Visit the IRS website and obtain the forms to complete your own income tax return. The IRS offers free fillable forms and electronic filing to any taxpayer, regardless of income. Complete your return and submit the forms electronically to the Internal Revenue Service.
