Despite LeBron James" Best Efforts, Warriors Are NBA Champions
There were times when the 2015 NBA Finals between the Golden State Warriors and Cleveland Cavaliers looked like it was headed for seven games. Although the Cavs were without Kyrie Irving and Kevin Love – they still had LeBron James, who looked determined to win bring a title to Cleveland. But eventually the Warriors figured out how to handle James’ Cavaliers, and clinched the championship with a 105-97 win in game six of the Finals.
The Warriors would have preferred to clinch the championship in Oakland, but winning the series in Cleveland didn’t stop them from celebrating. First year head coach Steve Kerr called the locker room chaos following the victory.
“It was chaos. Pure joy,” Kerr said, according to NBA.com. “The thing about the NBA playoffs, and I've been through this as a player and going all the way to The Finals five times as a player, but it had been 12 years since I'd been there. My last year with the Spurs. I almost forgot just how grueling the stretch is. I mean, two straight months of emotional stress and physical stress. Just the roller coaster ride that you're on. There are days when you think, boy, I don't know if this is going to happen. Then there are days that go better. As soon as you win a game, you celebrate for a few minutes and your stomach ties up in knots thinking about the next game. So you go through this for two months. Yeah, there's a lot of pent up energy, and relief more than anything, in that locker room.”
Andre Iguodala
Before the series ever started, people would have called you crazy if you insinuated that Andre Iguodala would win Finals MVP over teammate Stephen Curry. However, Iguodala was the most consistent player on the Warriors team, and he deserved the award.
Following the game, he started yelling in excitement at Curry.
"When we won, I'm yelling at Steph, 'We're going to Augusta!'" Iguodala said, according to ESPN. "You know how everybody goes to Disneyland? We're going to Augusta."
Although he tried to hide it, Curry was undoubtedly disappointed that he wasn’t named Finals MVP, but at the end of the day he couldn’t deny that Iguodala deserved it more than anyone.
“Oh, man, he was special, Curry said following the game. “Obviously he deserved that Finals MVP for the way he impacted the game on both ends and was always ready. I don't think I learned anything new about him because I know that's who he is, and he's shown that all year and throughout his career. He just needed an opportunity and stage to show the world. Playing against a great talent on the other side that was determined to try to help his team win. And Andre stepped up to that challenge every single night and a huge reason why we're celebrating right now. So can't say enough about that guy. For him to have gone through all the different things he's gone through in his career, to be able to hold a championship trophy, I know it's special.”
Same Place Next Year?
Both the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Golden State Warriors have what it takes to reach the Finals again in 2016. Both teams will likely have their core group of stars back, and both teams will have another year of experience playing together.
One thing is for sure: Nobody would be disappointed to see these two teams face off again in the Finals. However, one has to wonder if the Warriors would have been able to slow down a team that had James along with a healthy Irving and Love. After all, James alone was almost good enough to force seven games against the Warriors.
