Depression - A Self Worth Case Study

Mood Disorder affects people in several ways.
In my articles, I have been highlighting Mood Disorder through providing several cases as an example.
Here is another case that you will find interesting.
A University lecturer who holds a PhD specialising in Environmental Education lived in Fiji with his family.
In an effort to migrate to a better country for his children's education, he opted to send his wife and children to live in another country to enable his children to have better opportunities in life.
After they had spent more than 2 years living separately, he decided to move to the foreign country to join his wife and kids.
This was a decision made on impulse.
He thought that it will be easy for him to obtain work in the foreign country.
Finding work in a foreign country has its challenges.
Many applications he made did not draw any response from any University.
His attempts to seek work outside the University environment also did not draw any response.
Considering that he was the head of department for his area at the University in Fiji, he found it difficult to understand why he was unable to find work.
Vacant positions were advertised in the media and he responded to these.
He however had no responses.
Soon he realised that his previous experience counted for nothing and he started to question his self worth.
He started by slowly with drawing from his social circles.
Soon he found himself refusing to attend any functions or meet anyone.
Although his wife was not at fault, he found it hard talking to her without getting angry.
His children were also not spared in that he often got angry with them for no apparent reason.
He started to question his self worth and found that he often suffered migraines.
One day he fainted and was taken to Hospital.
He was admitted and faced other medical complications.
He then found another opportunity in Fiji on contract and applied for this.
He was successful and decided to return to Fiji alone.
He has not been to the foreign country again and it is now 5 years since he and his family lived separately.
This case highlights how a person begins to sink into depression when faced with situations of this nature.
He was employed all his life in Fiji and held a lucrative position.
Finding himself in a foreign country, he thought that all his qualifications were worthless and he was actually useless.
Mood Disorder and particularly depression can be caused by any change in circumstances.
Someone who is conditioned to work all his life finds it hard to cope without work and sinks into depression.
To snatch people from the jaws of depression, there needs to be greater public awareness on issues that cause Mood Disorder and on all aspects of Mood Disorder generally.
Many people commit suicide in Australia annually.
In a number of cases, this occurs through common every day situations.
Some people cope with these situations.
Others do not cope or cope differently.
To understand about depression and Mood Disorder issues, we recommend that you participate in our awareness seminars.
