How to Construct a Clothesline
- 1). Measure and mark two spots in your yard that are 10 feet apart.
- 2). Hold the handles of your post-hole digger and drive the ends into the soil, as would with a shovel, at one of the spots you marked. Pull the handles away from one another to hold on to the dirt. Lift the post-hole digger out of the ground. Swing the post-hole digger to a suitable spot nearby for the loose dirt. Push the handles together to release the dirt. Repeat until you have finished digging a hole 2 feet in depth at each of the spots you marked.
- 3). Fill the bottom of each hole with 2 inches of gravel using your shovel. This will help drain rain water away from the posts, and make them less likely to shift or tilt.
- 4). Place a wooden post in the center of each hole.
- 5). Mix two 10 lb. bags of quick-drying cement with water, according to label instructions, in a wheelbarrow. Have your friend hold the post upright in the hole. Use a level to confirm that the post is level. Fill in the hole with cement until the cement is 2 to 3 inches from ground level. Fill in the rest of the hole with soil. Pack the soil with the back side of your shovel. Check the post again with your level to ensure it is straight. Adjust the post as needed.
- 6). Repeat steps 4 and 5 for the other post. Allow the cement to dry overnight.
- 7). Measure and cut the board in half so you have two pieces that are 4 feet long each.
- 8). Place a piece of wood on top of one of the posts so it forms a "T" shape. Center the top piece, then screw to the post with five wood screws using your drill or screwdriver. Repeat with the other post.
- 9). Screw an eye bolt to each end of each piece of wood. Each "T" should have two eye bolts at the ends of the crosspiece.

Tie one end of your nylon string or rope to one of the eye bolts. Walk over to the other post, and thread the string through the eye bolt directly across from the first. Pull the string tight, then cut it and tie it to the eye bolt. Repeat this process for the other two eye bolts.
