Is Kentucky Bluegrass Really Blue?
- Healthy Kentucky bluegrass turf requires 1/2 to 2 inches of water per week. During periods of drought Kentucky bluegrass takes on what horticulturists from Kansas State University describe as "a bluish cast." Continual drought results in brown turf but when given water the dormant grass will green up.
- Each cultivar, or variety of, Kentucky bluegrass has a slightly different shade and hue. The Midnight cultivar is dark green and the America cultivar is a bright, dark green.
- Since Kentucky bluegrass requires more moisture than other grasses, it is grown in the western United States with irrigation. The grass grows without supplemental irrigation throughout Tennessee and cool, humid portions of the upper southern United States and into the northeast.
