    History

    • Although South Carolina's history dates back to the pre-Columbian era, by the mid-18th century, the state gained significant wealth exporting rice and other cash crops to Europe. In spite of the Civil War and the ensuing problem of racial segregation that lasted more than 100 years, South Carolina maintained a reputation as a place for innovative music, noteworthy architecture, breathtaking vistas and delicious cuisine.

    Features

    • South Carolina's arts and cultural life centers around Charleston with festivals celebrating fine arts, music and cuisine taking place throughout the year. Tourists interested in sports and beach recreational activities can venture beyond Charleston and make reservations at first-class resorts in Hilton Head, Myrtle Beach and Kiawah Island. Because of the state's moderate climate, tourists can plan South Carolina vacations year-round.

    Fun Fact

    • The Carolina Shag, South Carolina's official state dance, gained popularity in the 1940s when young people flocked to Myrtle Beach night spots to dance a southern version of the swing. Today, tourists young and old can sign up for Carolina Shag classes at dance clubs offering food, drink and fellowship.
