How to Make Your Own Skirt

    • 1). Look for skirt patterns online or in a fabric store catalog. You can also download and print free skirt patterns from the site linked below in References, or make your own. The way your skirt looks will depend a lot on the type of pattern you choose.

    • 2). Pick out skirt fabric, following the guidelines on the pattern envelope. You may want to use cotton, denim, polyester or rayon for a casual skirt, batiks or prints for a trendy skirt, gabardine or wool for a suit skirt, or satin for a dressy skirt.

    • 3). Choose thread that matches the skirt fabric as closely as possible, plus any other notions you need, such as lining fabric, elastic, a zipper, buttons or fusible interfacing.

    • 4). Cut out the skirt pattern pieces using the cutting lines for the size you need. Press the wrinkles out of the pattern pieces using a low temperature iron.

    • 5). Pin the skirt patterns to the fabric and cut out the pieces, following the cutting guide in the pattern directions. You may want to leave the patterns pinned to the fabric until you’re ready to use each piece, so that they’re labeled.

    • 6). Sew the skirt pieces together following the pattern directions, then try on the skirt to make sure it fits. Adjust the width or length of the skirt if needed before completing the hem.
