Where to Find Barn Swallows - Complete Range Map
Common Name: Barn Swallow
Scientific Name: Hirundo rustica
Migration: Migratory; all birds migrate, but an overlapping year-round range is continually occupied.
The most widespread swallow in the world, the barn swallow prefers a variety of open habitats, including pastures, grasslands, meadows, wide marshes, open wetlands, prairies and savannahs. Habitats near water are preferred, as well as areas where structures such as barns, sheds or similar buildings provide good nesting sites.
Abundant perches are also important to barn swallows, and they will use wires, bare branches and rooflines to perch, singly or in flocks, while surveying their territory.
These are adaptable birds and will readily take advantage of urban and suburban habitats as well, such as golf courses or large urban parks with plenty of green space such as sports fields. These birds tend to avoid dense habitats such as thick forests or jungles, and they are also absent from the driest deserts and elevations above 10,000 feet.
Depending on the time of year, barn swallows are found on every continent except Antarctica, and vagrant sightings have even been recorded in Hawaii, Greenland and other remote areas.
