    Preparation

    • 1). Examine the input jacks on the back of the headphone amplifier. Some amplifiers are equipped with RCA audio inputs, some have XLR inputs, some have stereo inputs, and others are equipped with some combination of two or three input options.

    • 2). Make a note of the type of inputs with which the headphone amplifier you are using is equipped.

    • 3). Look on the back of the audio receiver. Locate the preamplifier output jacks. Preamplifier output jacks are generally RCA audio output jacks labeled either "Pre Out" or "Pre Mix."

    Amplifier with RCA Audio Inputs

    • 1). Plug one end of the red RCA audio cable into the red RCA preamplifier output jack on the back of the receiver.

    • 2). Connect the other end of the red RCA audio cable to the amplifier's red RCA audio input jack.

    • 3). Insert one end of the white RCA audio cable into the white RCA preamplifier output jack on the back of the receiver.

    • 4). Connect the other end of the white RCA audio cable to the amplifier's white RCA audio input jack.

    Amplifier with XLR Jacks

    • 1). Plug one XLR to RCA adapter into the amplifier's "Left" XLR jack. Plug the other XLR to RCA adapter into the amplifier's "Right" XLR jack.

    • 2). Insert one end of the white RCA audio cable into the RCA jack on the XLR to RCA adapter plugged into the amplifier's "Left" channel. Connect the other end of this cable to the receiver's white RCA preamplifier output jack.

    • 3). Plug one end of the red RCA audio cable into the RCA jack on the XLR to RCA adapter plugged into the amplifier's "Right" channel. Connect the other end of this cable to the receiver's red RCA preamplifier output jack.

    Amplifier with Stereo Jack

    • 1). Plug the stereo plug end of a stereo to RCA cable into the amplifier's "Left" channel.

    • 2). Connect the other end of the cable, from step 1, to the receiver's white RCA preamplifier output jack.

    • 3). Plug the stereo plug end of another stereo to RCA cable into the amplifier's "Right" channel.

    • 4). Connect the other end of the cable, from step 3, to the receiver's red RCA preamplifier output jack.
