Variability in Compounding of Oral Liquids for Children

Conclusion

Baseline survey results confirmed the hypothesis that significant variation in current compounding practices existed in Michigan. A statewide collaborative initiative was undertaken to establish standard concentrations for these compounded products. When standard concentrations are established, these standards will be disseminated throughout the state to eliminate variations in pediatric oral liquid compounds and to reduce risk of errors. Formulations for the standard concentrations will be stored on a website that prescribers and pharmacists will be encouraged to use.
