Recommendations for Above Ground Pools
- The two types of above ground pools are soft and hard sided. Many hard-sided pools require professional installation while soft-sided pools may be set up yourself and do not require as much ground preparation. Don't forget to add maintenance costs when choosing your above ground pool. Generally, the larger and fancier pools require more maintenance and cost to stay in excellent condition. Soft-sided pools may be moved with less hassle than hard-sided pools. If you intend to stay in your home for many years and will leave the pool up year-round, purchasing a hard-sided pool may be more beneficial.
- The recommended size of above ground pool depends on the size of your backyard. Measure it from your home out to the far edge of your property, and determine the width of the space as well. Draw the property on a sheet of paper with 1/2 inch equaling 1 foot of space in your yard. Sketch in any storage sheds or other buildings in the area, which allows you to determine how big of a pool fits comfortably on your land without the area looking unnecessarily crowded. Consider how much space a deck requires when determining the size as well. Determine how many swimmers will normally be in the pool at the same time. Allow 15 square feet of water surface per person. An above ground pool with a water surface of 250 square feet accommodates approximately 16 people.
- The homeowner must consider the legalities of owning an above ground pool. Contact your local municipality to determine whether you need a permit to add this feature to your property. Other questions to ask are if safety features, such as fencing or other boundaries, are required in your town for this type of pool. There also may be regulations regarding draining and refilling pools if your area rations lawn watering and other water needs at times.
- The proper winter care of your pool is necessary to ensure it lasts for many years. Remove all pool equipment such as the ladder, pool vacuum and toys to protect them from harsh weather. Test the pool water to ensure it is balanced, and then add a winter chemicals kit and follow the directions carefully. Lower the level of the water so it is beneath any inlets or skimmers, and cover them with winterized covers. Remove the pump and motor and clean and dry them before storing. Drain the hoses and pool filter tank. Cover the pool with a winterized cover to protect your above ground pool.
