Welcome to the Heard Museum

In 1929 Dwight and Maie Heard established this location in what is now central Phoenix to house their personal art and artifacts collection.

Today, the focus of the Heard Museum is both traditional and contemporary Native American art. There are more than 35,000 artifacts in its permanent collection at the Heard Museum, displayed in 10 exhibit galleries.

Heard Museum Permanent Exhibits

The only word I can use to describe the Heard Museum is stunning. Every time I go I am captivated by the beauty, the colors, the richness, and the uniqueness of the exhibits.

Some of the exhibits that you'll find there every time you visit include:

• History and Collections of the Heard Museum located in the Sandra Day O'Connor Gallery which traces the museum's history of more than seven decades
• We Are! Arizona's First People which is an interactive visit with Arizona's 21 federally recognized tribal communities.

• Remembering Our Indian School Days: The Boarding School Experience featuring historic photographs, memorabilia, artwork and first-person oral histories of the assimilation and Americanization Native American children.
• Every Picture Tells a Story is another interactive exhibit with more than 200 works of cultural and fine art that shows how designs tell stories based on life experiences involving the environment, nature, animal life, family life and community. Hands-on activities for all ages are found here.
• HOME: Native People of the Southwest displays the Heard Museum’s most prized masterpieces, sweeping landscapes, poetry, and personal recollections of the Southwest.

Heard Museum Facilities

The Heard Museum is a wonderful place to visit, learn about, and enjoy Native art and cultures, but it is also more than that. As an organization that seriously commits to the accurate and sensitive interpretation of Native cultures and art, the Heard Museum also provides opportunities for special lectures, tours for school groups, and a Speaker's Bureau.

The Heard Museum is also recognized for its research facility, The Billie Jane Baguley Library and Archives.

Guided Tours

The Heard Museum offers Guided Tours every day, three times per day, for the public. A guided tour at the Heard Museum lasts about 45 minutes and is free with your paid admission.

Special Events at the Heard Museum

Special events, programs, and festivals are held often at the Heard Museum. Native art and culture can be experienced at signature events like the Heard Museum Spanish Market, annual Indian Fair & Market and World Championship Hoop Dance Contest.

In addition to these larger community events, the Heard Museum offers a wide range of programs—artist demonstrations, performances, booksignings, gallery talks, public tours, lectures and workshops.

Kachinas and Jewelry

Some of the exhibits at the Heard Museum that you might find unique include the extensive collections of Native southwest jewelry, as well as the collection of about 1,200 katsina dolls donated by the late Senator Barry M. Goldwater and the Fred Harvey Company.

Heard Museum offers a variety of beautiful rooms and courtyards where you can entertain from 20 to several hundred guests. The Spanish Colonial-style architecture of the Heard Museum and its arched walkways, spacious galleries, outdoor bricked patios and fountains, and lush desert landscapes make a lovely environment for your special occasion.

The Heard Museum has a wonderful gift shop and book store, as well as a gourmet café (no hot dogs and chips!). The Café is open every day from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. You can access both the Café and the gift shop without paying an entrance fee to the museum.

The Heard Museum is open every day (except New Year's Day, Easter, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas) from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Mondays through Saturdays and from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sundays.

Seniors (65+): $13.50
Students with a valid student ID: $7.50
Children (6-12): $7.50
Children under 6, Heard Museum members and Native Americans are free.
