White picket fences are a classic accent in American landscaping. The tradition of planting floral arrangements around a white picket fence exists because colorful flowers give a dynamic contrast to the fence. Plant your favorite flowers in a variety of styles and arrangements in your yard to create a picturesque image with your fence as the backdrop. - Add a white arbor to your yard to accentuate your white picket fences. An arbor is a large wooden fixture built in the shape of an arch. Arbors often hold flowers or serve as a covering for a garden seat or bench. With a center walkway leading up to your front door, add two arbors on either side of your yard. Grow climbing roses around one of the arbors. Add a swinging bench to the arbor on the opposite side of the yard.
- Create a collage of color around the base of your fence. Start with yellow, then add red, purple flowers with lush green foliage surrounding them. You can layer the flowers so that the colors alternate both horizontally and vertically. Choose low-maintenance perennial varieties to avoid disturbing your design throughout the year. Options include impatiens, sea thrifts or Siberian irises. Visit your local gardening store to request a list of flower options that grow best in your region.
- If you want to keep your manicured lawn visible beyond your fence, but still have the desire to give your fence a facelift, grow large clusters of hydrangeas at each corner of your fence. When at their full height, these flowers can provide a semi-private space where you can place a reading bench or stool. During the summer, you can use this area to relax away from the scorching sun. Give your flowers several years to develop into majestic plants that elegantly spill over the corners of your white picket fence.
