How to Burn Grass That Has Gone to Seed
- 1). Create a fire barrier by mowing a swath at least 20 feet wide around the entire grass area to be burned.
- 2). Soak all wooden fence posts in close proximity to the prescribed burn area with water to protect them from catching fire during the burn.
- 3). Burn small areas of grass at a time, using matches. Push grass into the flames to help the fire move from one grass bunch to another, using a rake or shovel. Pay attention to wind speed during each controlled burn. Have water on hand to douse flames if the wind picks up.
- 4). Stand up-wind while the fires are burning to avoid smoke inhalation and possible skin burn. After grasses have burned off douse the areas with water to extinguish smoldering fires.
