Being on a diet can be challenging and food cravings can make it even more difficult. It is exactly the time when our will to sustain a balanced diet is being greatly tested.Read on...So why do we have food cravings and especially unhealthy ones?Food cravings literally mean that the body has its signals mixed up,and there are a variety of reasons to blame for that. Here I include the important ones in no particular order:

  • Lack of sufficient hydration:if not hydrated right, the sense of thirst can be easily mistaken as hunger. Many people start eating before even having a single glass of water!Coffee, tea, soda, and other drinks can make it even worse!Lack of hydration can cause many more side effects such as:constant fatigue, slow metabolic rate and weight gain, reduced immune function, hormonal imbalances, lack of concentration, and premature ageing.

  • Addiction to substances:This is mainly connected with junk foods;prepackaged foods from supermarkets and fast food chains contain tones of chemicals, salt and sugar. Most light products are also included in this list. These foods usually have a strong taste to satisfy faster than normal your taste buds and as result they increase to maximum unhealthy food cravings.

  • Bored, stressed, angered, depressed, tired:food cravings can be easily triggered by these emotions;it is exactly this need for comfort eating that triggers them. The fact is that when you are under this state of mind your cravings resistance levels are below zero.

  • Not eating enough:sometimes people skip meals for various reasons or no reason at all, especially breakfast. The result is feeling hungry all day long and keep snacking all the time. When the body feels deprived and the blood sugar is low,it is very likely you will submit to any temptations that come your way.

  • Seeing the reasons above its easy to understand that there is no one-size-fits-all solution for controlling cravings. Here are some helpful ideas:Start your day well with a healthy breakfast( many fruits, some nuts, oats, a yogurt or a glass of skimmed milk)and never skip any of the important meals or wait too long to eat.

Drink water throughout the day up to 10 glasses.Sometimes food cravings last for only a few minutes so if you involve yourself with some sort of activity (not anywhere near the kitchen)it will easily expire.Empty your pantry or fridge of chocolates, cookies, chips and anything that can trigger you with food cravings.

Eating healthy organic based foods will also help you to balance food cravings. To finish lets not forget that we are not robots, so its no a big deal if you give in once a week to a little treat, like this you will feel satisfied and less restricted.
