What shots does your child need to attend IPS?
The beginning of the school year is nearly here. The stores are swamped as parents rush to pick out the best First-Day-of-School outfit and shop for supplies. But before your IPS student can even start school, they must have all the proper immunizations. The State of Indiana does require certain immunizations and does for school entry. Below is the list of required immunizations. Additional immunizations are recommended by the CDC, but are not currently required.
Make sure you aren't caught by surprise!

Grade 12 Requirements:
Meningitis is a disease that affects the membranes of the brain and spinal cord. There are several types of bacteria and viruses that cause meningitis, but the bacteria that can cause serious problems and death for our children and young adults is Neisseria Meningitis.
For the last few years, Indiana law has required that all students 6th grade through 12th grade must be immunized for this form of meningitis. For the 2014-2015 School Year, a second meningitis vaccine will be required for 12th grader students unless the first dose was given at age 16.
Indiana State Law also requires that school systems provide information to families every year about meningitis. You can find more information about meningitis at the office of your child’s school. If you have any questions, you can call Rae Wallis R.N., IPS Administrative Coordinator for Nursing Services at 226-4406.
Please contact your physician about getting the needed immunizations before school starts. You can also contact the Marion County Health Department at 221-2122 to find a low cost immunization clinic near you.
If you need immunizations and aren't sure where to go, the Marion County Health Department offers clinics located throughout the city. The clinics offer nursing services on a walk-in basis and immunizations services. Immunization services are available as a walk-in service and by appointment on certain days.
