Fifteen things you didn’t know you could find at Disney World

I’m lucky enough to live around the corner from Walt Disney World, so I’m over at the parks quite a bit. To help me keep track of all that’s available at this enormous vacation kingdom (and to help you find whatever you’re looking for, whether it’s your first visit or you go once a month), I created an app. Where in Disney World lets you browse or search for thousands of things found in hundreds of shops, restaurants, and attractions throughout the four theme parks and Downtown Disney.

While creating the app, I found a few things that surprised even me. (Where in Disney World is a free download for iPhones, iPads and iPod Touch; you can download it free. Here are a few things you likely didn’t know you could find at Walt Disney World:

1. Truffled Mac & Cheese Hot Dog

Of course, Disney World has hot dogs. But increasingly we’re seeing mouth-watering gourmet hot dogs popping up at the quick-service restaurants. In the Magic Kingdom, Friar Tuck’s in Fantasyland has the Truffled Macaroni & Cheese Dog, topped with Panko and green onions. The Lunching Pad in Tomorrowland offers the BLT hot dog with ranch dressing and the Philly Cheese Steak Dog. Over in Downtown Disney at Fulton’s, you can find Lobster Corn Dogs with sweet chili aioli. The app can find regular hot dogs, too, which can be surprisingly elusive. We stopped by the Electric Umbrella with a picky little eater in search of one, to no avail. A quick check of the app told us the three places in Epcot you could find a plain hot dog. Problem solved!

2. Frozen iPhone cases

Frozen merchandise of all sorts is showing up in the theme parks, including these limited edition iPhone cases that sold out as soon as they hit the parks at the beginning of 2014. Your best bet for finding them now is the Tomorrowland Power & Light gift shop at Space Mountain, or the World of Disney store in Downtown Disney.

iPhone cases can be found in most of the stores, but it’s worth browsing through them all since some cases can only be found in one location. If you’re a fan of Japanese anime, Sailor Moon and Rilakkuma both have designs available at Epcot. (I even saw a Hello Kitty Blackberry Bold case, if you’re going old school.) Throughout Epcot you can find cases with flags (like Germany or Italy). In a few places, including Hollywood Studios, you can find limited edition Haunted Mansion or Star Wars cases.

3. Macallan 18 year

Disney World offers a fairly expansive cocktail and craft beer selection if you know where to look. But if you’re in the mood for a single malt scotch whisky like The Macallan 18 year, look no further than the Rose & Crown Pub at Epcot. You can get a flight with the 12 year, 15 year and 18 year varieties for comparison.

4. Cherokee Alphabet Wooden Blocks

Uncle Goose creates some unusual alphabet blocks, a few of which can be found in the American Adventure pavilion at Epcot. The Cherokee alphabet blocks make a unique gift (you can get them online as well.) They also sell sets teaching Braille and Sign Language and all about the American presidents.

5. Voodoo Dolls

This might be one of the last things you expect to see in Disney World, but you can in fact get voodoo dolls in two locations: The House of Blues Company Store and Magetron, both in Downtown Disney. While you’re there, check out the Voodoo Shrimp at Crossroads (shrimp sautéed in an amber beer reduction served atop jalapeño corn bread) or the Mahi Mahi with Voodoo Shrimp at Splitsville (with sushi rice).

6. Doctor Who

Britain’s time-traveling doctor is represented at Disney World, not surprisingly in the UK pavilion at Epcot. You can find a weeping angels T-shirt, Daleks posters, and a big coffee table book of all the villains from the show. You can pick up the 11th doctor’s favorite treats, Jammie Dodgers, at the Tea Caddy across the way. And down at the Morocco pavilion, you can buy a red fez. Because they’re cool.

7. Back to the Future LEGO

The LEGO store in Downtown Disney is always one of our favorite stops. Last time we were there, we found the Deloreon time machine from the Back to the Future movies. They also have the Simpsons house, the Minecraft sets and of course, the LEGO movie sets.

8. Japanese Face Massager

Mistukoshi, the large department store in the Japan pavilion at Epcot, has everything you’d expect in a city department store. You can find all sorts of unusual items here, from the anime and video game merchandise and toys are in the front, to the sake and snacks in the back. The housewares section is one of my favorites to peruse. It’s a good place to pick up an unusual and inexpensive souvenir that you’ll use every day at home. How about some Kimmidoll nail clippers or a face massager? They also have items to ease your theme park aches and pains, like Shiatsu foot pads and the Head Spa scalp massager.

9. Incan Quinoa

The Spice & Tea Company, hidden inside Mickey’s Pantry at Downtown Disney, is a gourmet foodie’s toy store. Besides this nutty-tasting grain, you can find a huge variety of flavored sugars (including chocolate peppermint, habanero,  and raspberry), loose-leaf teas (like hazelnut, cranberry apple tart and matcha green tea), and of course, Mickey Mouse-shaped pasta. They even carry catnip!

10. Minnie Mouse shot glasses

Minnie Mouse and shot glasses aren’t two phrases you’d necessarily put together, but they do exist. Shot glasses of all designs are found throughout the parks (Aerosmith, Pirates of the Caribbean, Chinese zodiac, Madame Leota, and Wacky Woolies, to name just a few). For an unusual selection, head to Mickey’s Pantry for Star Wars, retro Epcot, the seagulls from Finding Nemo, and a smattering of other designs from all the theme parks.
