Activities for Middle School Parents

    Homework Accessibility

    • While it is important for your child to complete his own homework, set aside time to be accessible if your child has questions or wants an assignment reviewed. When your child is in college, she will have access to tutors or writing assistance; so there is nothing wrong with providing input. Additionally, this will keep you abreast of what your child is doing in school. You can extend the homework-help time by asking your child about his day as well, and sharing information about your own activities.

    Support Extracurricular Activities

    • Take an interest in activities your child enjoys. If your child is involved in sports competition, chess matches or other school activities, volunteer to drive. Stay at the event and cheer for your child. If the event is immediately after school, consider bringing snacks for the team or organizing a sign-up sheet so parents can take turns being responsible for drinks and snacks. Students and the coach will appreciate your efforts.

    Eat Dinner Together

    • Although after-school activities can put a crimp in family dinners, make an effort to eat dinner with your child as often as possible. In September 2010, Columbia University concluded that teens who eat dinner with their families multiple times a week were more likely to have better grades and were less likely to have alcohol or drug problems. Family dinners help foster relationships, and family conversations may also help children accumulate a stronger vocabulary.

    Activities at Home

    • Even if your middle-school child is reluctant to do activities with Mom or Dad in public, he may welcome quality time with parents in private. Take an interest in what your child enjoys even if it may not be your first choice. Let your child teach you how to play a video game so you can have a friendly competition. Watch a sports game on TV or share another passion that your child chooses.
