Help the NSPCC to End Child Cruelty!
A new voluntary fundraising group has been launched in the Wigan area with the objective of raising vital funds for the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC). Although the UK Government has confirmed additional funding for the continued development of the NSPCC helpline services for the next four years, the level of funding has been significantly reduced.
For the four year period covering 2007/08 to 2010/11, the UK Government committed 30m to the NSPCC. That equates to an average of 7.5m per annum. With this level of Government funding, the NSPCC still had the task of raising a further 50m over the same period in order to maintain, develop and deliver its services.
Over the next four year period, covering 2011/12 to 2014/15, the UK Government will provide a total of 11.2m to the NSPCC. That equates to an average of 2.8m per annum. Therefore, government funding has been reduced by 4.7m per year (-62.7%).
Now, more than ever before, the NSPCC is reliant upon receiving financial support from members of the public, corporate organisations and voluntary fundraising groups.
The NSPCC protects children across the UK. They run a wide range of services for both children and adults, including national helplines and local projects. Probably the most well known services are ChildLine and the NSPCC Helpline.
ChildLine is the UKs free, confidential helpline for children and young people. Trained volunteers provide help and support, by phone and online, 24 hours a day. Children can also receive advice by text.
The NSPCC Helpline is a free, 24-hour service that provides advice to anyone worried about a childs welfare. You can also report a concern about a child being badly treated and this can be completely anonymous.
If you would like more information about the NSPCC, or if you feel you can spare some of your own time and would like to volunteer with this group, they would love to hear from you. They can be contacted at the following email address, nspcc.wigan@btinternet.com.
The new fundraising group, the NSPCC Wigan & District Fundraising Branch, will be organising various activities to try to drum up support from the local community. There are already active volunteers in the Standish, Winstanley, Billinge, Blackrod and Chorley districts. Fundraising activities range from collections at supermarkets, coffee mornings, stands at school / church ftes, village shows, etc. They also plan to arrange gala nights and other evening functions in the future.
