How to Fence a Field

    Building a barbed wire fence

    • 1). Clear the land where the fence will be placed. Clearing the land means removing any obstacles that would hinder construction, such as brush, trees or large rocks.

    • 2). Create the corner posts assembly. The corner post assembly consists of one main post, which is a thick wood post that should have a diameter of at least 12 inches, two bracing posts that follow the fence line on ether side of the corner post, two spacing poles that run from the top of the corner post to the tops of the bracing posts, and two wires that go around the bottom of the bracing posts to the top of the corner post. It sounds complicated, but just start at the corner post. Use the post hole digger to make a hole about 2 feet deep. Place the corner post into the hole and pack the empty space around the corner post tightly with soil. Then do the same for the bracing posts. Jam the spacing posts in between the corner post and the bracing posts a few inches from the top and nail them into place. Use some barbed wire to make loops that go from the top of the corner post to the bottom of each bracing post and fasten them on each side with staples. Place the 2x4s in the center of the loops of wire and twist them until they are fairly tight.

    • 3). Run a single wire about 6 inches from the ground around the corner posts. It is only used to show a straight line where the rest of the posts will be placed. Use the post driver to place a metal post along the wire every 10 to 20 feet.

    • 4). Secure the barbed wire to the posts. Use a come-along to stretch wire from one corner post to another at the desired height. Fasten the wire to the corner and brace posts with staples. Then attach the wire to the metal posts with wire ties. Continue this procedure until all of the wires are in place around the fence.
