    • 1). Examine what connection options are available on your HDTV. The two most common high-definition connection types are HDMI and component connections. Take note of which one you would like to use for the HD converter box and purchase the corresponding cable or cables if you do not own them already.

    • 2). Determine what resolution your TV supports. Most high-definition TVs offer 720p, 1080i and 1080p resolutions. This information can often be found on the TV itself; if not, check the TV's documentation or contact the manufacturer of the HDTV.

    • 3). Contact your cable, satellite or IPTV provider and schedule an HD converter box installation. Now is the time to specify to the salesperson all the options you will need in an HD converter box. For instance, if you want to use the HDMI port on your TV for a 1080p HD connection, make sure to inform the salesperson you need a converter box that supports both 1080p resolution and HDMI connections.
