The football season is really getting exciting and with the first round of the FA Cup underway we are now moving into one of the busiest periods of the football season, a time when teams can either enhance their title chances or reside themselves to fighting in the trenches to avoid relegation to the Football League.

With the increase in fixtures over the coming months it can put an immense strain on the squad and individual players, with premier league injuries increasing and managers frantically rotating squads before they are in a position to add to them in January when the transfer windows reopens.

Some premier league injuries are more common than others, with the vast majority of sports injuries typically occurring as a result of overuse from where a player pushes themselves beyond what their body is capable of achieving. In a finely tuned athlete the slightest over stretch or awkward landing can lead to an injury and time on the sidelines and in the treatment room.

This article discusses some of the more common types of premier league injuries and those who are currently side lined by them.

Knee Injuries

Knee injuries are common in a number of sports, especially those requiring a great deal of starting and stopping motions and turning at speed. Injuries can range in their severity, from a simple sprain to major ligament damage in the form of an ACL rupture or tear. They can all happens in the same way, typically where a players foot remains on the floor yet their knee joint turns resulting in the injury.

Enhancements in technology have given players better grip on the football pitch, the downside is that sometimes their foot being rooted to the turf can cause problems when attempting to pivot quickly. This happened to Michael Owen where he attempted to turn quickly on the wing but his knee gave way and he suffered an ACL injury which resulted in a lengthy spell on the sidelines and intensive physiotherapy.

Premier league injuries pertaining to the ACL are becoming more common among footballers, with a total of nine players currently out of action, with some players not expected to return to action until next year. Darren Gibson of Everton has also recently suffered an ACL injury and with no return date set he can expect a lengthy period in the treatment room, with recovery times of up to a year should you require surgery.

Danny Welbeck is currently side lined with a knee injury, though as he is expected back within the next two weeks the injury is not too severe and the knee simple needs to be rested and the inflammation of the joint managed before returning to training.

Ankle Injuries

Ankle injuries are also fairly common among footballers, with the premier league injuries table showing fifteen players currently out of action as a result of ankle complaints. They can range in their severity with ligament damage graded from one to three.

The majority of ankle injuries sustained are self-limiting and will get better following a few days of rest. They can happen as a result of slipping on a wet pitch, landing awkwardly from a jump or as a result of a bad challenge.

Following any ankle injury it is advisable to stop what you are doing and rest to avoid making the injury worse. Once you have sustained damage to the ligaments there will be a weakness in the joint and a reduced stability, therefore continuing to play can lead to you rolling your ankle again and causing further damage.

Some players currently of action include Ben Foster, with a scheduled return date of 30th November, whilst Ciaran Clark of West Brom has no set return date as of yet. This simply highlights the range in severities of such an injury and the more you can do in the immediate aftermath to help with your recovery the better.

Final Words

As we move closer to the winter schedule we can expect the premier league injuries table to increase in numbers as fatigue starts to set in among players and succumb to injuries. It's pretty obvious but the key to success for any team is ensuring your best players are on the pitch, but for those with a small squad a few injuries can have a major impact on their overall season.
