In many cases the clothing that people wear or have made are done in these colors.
They are made many weeks or months in advance and some people spend vast sums of money to get the clothing that they want to wear to the festival.
The clothing for the festival is often simple street clothing right up until the day of the actual Fat Tuesday carnivals and parades.
On that day, the actual last day prior to the Lent beginning that signifies the end of the festivities, the clothing is particularly ostentatious and the wearers are engaged in all kinds of revelry.
Mardi Gras is typically a celebration of the very luxurious life.
Fat Tuesday means high living.
Handfuls of gem or jewel-like necklaces, called throw beads are tossed into the crowds and these are used to accent the clothing that is worn during Mardi Gras.
High living and high good fun is the order of the entire festival, and the clothing that is worn shows that to a high degree.
The clothing, the carnivals, festivals and parades are showy and bright in color.
They are worn to show the kind of excess that is being undertaken prior to the deprivation that will take place -again-traditionally, during the Lenten period of time when the faithful give up something to honor their God.
Many people spend the time to make their own clothing for this most pleasant of events, wearing colors that strike a chord with them and speak to the other carnival goers.
The Entire festival is about excess and nothing says that more readily than the outrageous and ostentatious clothing that is worn.
