Dapeng T998 Review - China"s Attempt For A Media Cell Phone
The unknown outside China manufacturer Dapeng, has begun selling their catalog of mobile phones internationally. One of their newer models is the T998, advertised by Dapeng as a all in one media phone. The logic behind this statement from Dapeng is that they claim it has excellent speakers, has a good built in MP3 and mp4 player built in, can offer TV viewing and FM listening, and can display movies in 16:9 widescreen or 4:3 formats.

Here is my opinion
The Good
Speakers That Are Impressively Loud: As per the claim Dapeng made, the built in speakers are clear and loud. I tested the cell phone outside outside a stop on a metro line with quite a crowd present, and was able to pick up the sounds quite well.
Accelerometer Browsing: Instead of only UI browsing with a touchscreen or keys, you are interestingly enough able to navigate by shaking the phone (aka Shake Control). Not something I have seen before, I feel it is an innovative and unique way to navigate the UI and be able to control certain functions.
Moview Watching In Widescreen 16:9 Format: Not only does the accelerometer control the UI, it also has the ability of quick flipping video files from letterbox 4:3 to widescreen 16:9 simply and easily by rotating the phone to the side.

The Ok
Worldwide Quadband Usage + Unlocked: This cell phone is quite nice in that it is carrier contract free, and can be used worldwide.
Bluetooth: I found pairing with Bluetooth devices, unfortunately I found the range on the one I tested was only about 1 foot, so bad for pairing with other phones.
The Bad
Music Intro On Power On: The speakers the phone uses are very good, but every time the phone is powered on, an unmuteable, and LOUD, music intro greets you.
Access To the Internet: WAP is steady, if not spectacular, however, I have gotten used to at least having EDGE speed.. Personally, I also would have like a wifi connection as well.
God Awful Camera: Forget good camera phone pics, as the resolution is bad, the pictures you take most likely will look very poor even by the stereotypically bad camera phone standards.
Lack Of Java: My opinion is that this phone would be improved if I could at least download and use java apps for obtaining some new functions and get some new games.
Movie Player: The movie player can only play 3GP files. The video camera informs you that your clip is an AVI file, but when you download AVI files to the player, they will not play.

Final thoughts
As you might expect from the title, the phones media player is at least an acceptable one. Music playing beats video playing hands down, but if you can find or convert some videos to 3GP format, you will find that watching movies is fun in widescreen. It has all the basic features you could want in a phone, and also has enough extras to warrant its price.
Price. US$90.04
