How to Use Capacitive Coupling to Locate Power Lines
- 1). Press the instrument's "On" switch. Usually there is a light or audible signal that stays lit or beeps continuously to indicate the detector is active.
- 2). Don rubber electrician's gloves. Hold the voltage sensor's barrel in your hand.
- 3). Place the tip of the sensor near a live circuit. The sensor tip acts as a small capacitor coupled to the circuit. The voltage is detected by the circuit and lights up the indicator.
