How Do I Donate My Car to a Nonprofit?
- 1). Choose a nonprofit organization to donate your car to. Stick with charities that are approved by the IRS. You can verify charity status on the IRS website (see Resources). National charitable organizations, such as the Make-A-Wish Foundation, accept car donations or you can look for a local charity. Use the IRS website to search for charities in your area.
- 2). Determine the fair market value of your car, which is what the IRS allows you to deduct on your income taxes. Check your car's value in Kelly Blue Book and see what similar cars are selling for in your area to come up with the fair market value.
- 3). Take or tow your car to the nonprofit. Some charities do take cars that are not running. If you can't get the car to the nonprofit, the charity may be able to pick it up from you. It is better if you can get the car to them though, so that they do not waste money and resources on getting the car.
- 4). Sign over your car title to the nonprofit when you deliver your car. Ask for a donation receipt if they do not give you one. Hold on to the receipt because you will need it for your tax deduction.
