How to Care for a Wood Fence
- 1). Protect the wood fence immediately after installation. Apply a waterproof sealer to the wood fence to according to manufacturer's instructions. A waterproof sealer will help protect the fence from moisture and guard against premature rotting and mildew. Most waterproof sealers go on easily with a brush or roller.
- 2). Rake leaves and yard litter away from your wood fence, as needed. Wet leaves and debris lying up against your fence can encourage mold and mildew growth.
- 3). Turn any sprinkler heads away from the wood fence. Continuous exposure to water can damage the fence.
- 4). Repair the wood fence immediately if you notice loose boards or hardware. Broken areas of fence that remain unfixed can look unsightly and put a strain on other areas of fence. Replace broken hardware as soon as possible and repair boards with a waterproof wood glue.
- 5). Clean your fence regularly to remove dirt and debris. Run a soft-bristled broom along the surface of the wood fence to remove any loose dirt and cobwebs that accumulate.
