How to Hit Long Irons - The Lost Art of the Long Iron Shot

While I think that hybrids are great for the average golfer, often times long irons can still play a vital role in your golf game.
There are many instances where having a 3 or 4 iron in your bag will serve you better than a hybrid club or fairway wood.
I was recently talking with a gentleman who used to play the PGA tour back in the days of Nicklaus and Watson and he said what those guys could do with longer irons was tremendous.
Here I am going to tell you why you need long irons and how to hit long irons effectively.
First and foremost has is ever occurred to you that many times you actually need to hit the ball low? Sure hitting those high fairway wood and hybrid shots are nice, but I have found many situations where if I did not have my 3 iron I would have been in big trouble.
For instance if you decide to really let a drive rip and you do not square the face at impact you may launch the ball straight right.
When you get to your golf ball you are right under a tree and need to hit a low fade or slice in order to get around the tree and on the green.
It is hard to keep a hybrid low, but with a 3 irons I can open my stance, play the ball opposite my right foot, and hit a low fade right around the trees that never gets more than 5 feet off of the ground.
I cannot pull that shot off with a hybrid.
Also the ability to hit long irons just makes you look like a better player, and chances are if you can learn how to hit long irons well then you are going to be a really good player.
My advice with long irons is just to swing easy and let the loft of the club do the work.
A typical 3 iron has around 21 degrees of loft which means that it can easily get the ball airborne if you just let it! How to hit long irons seems to have become a bit of a lost art, but if you can learn to master it you will not only impress the people at your local city course or country club, but you will become a better shot maker with the rest of your clubs.
