After more than 10 years as a machine embroidery enthusiast I finally got around to using puffy foam.
It is funny how you put off trying things till you absolutely have to.
I had a customer who wanted a baseball cap for a sports team and I needed to replicate one he already had.
Not drama on the digitising side of things I can do that with my eyes shut, yes rally I can.
I had to make a Halloween spider last year and as I am terrified of spiders I pretty much digitised it with my eyes shut.
Anyhow I have this cap that I must copy now I know it is puffy foam that makes it stand out but I have never used it, so off to the embroidery supply shopI go and get myself some puffy foam.
Here is the trick and seriously there is not much to it.
You need to have your design digitises so that it has a satin stitch border all around it.
This is what cuts the foam.
I used two layers of foam as I wanted to it to be quiet high.
The satins stitch goes around the letters, I did have the idea to stop the embroidery after the blue lettering and take the foam off but that did not work it did not cut the foam neatly, on the original cap the satin boarder is quiet flat next to the blue letters so I thought that I should remove the foam before stitching the border.
So just let the whole thing stitch and then take the foam off, it is very easy.
You may wish to burn the little remnant of foam away from the edges with a Hot Crystal Applicator/Heat Wand.
I did not bother because I used black foam on a black cap and I did not see any bits of foam sticking out.
The puffy foam needs to be used with a satin stitch a complex fill with just fatten the foam.
So if you have not tried puffy foam yet go for it.
It is really easy and gives an awesome effect.
