Prep the Hair

1

Apply styling gel to roots, paying special attention to the crown of the head where the majority of the styling happens for this hairdo. The styling gel adds texture to hair, helps to create volume and hold the shape of the beehive.
2

Create a middle part and blow dry your hair straight. Use a round brush on the roots to avoid drying hair too flat against your head. Use the round brush on the ends of the hair to create an upward flip. The flip style was popular in the 1960s; flipping the ends up will emphasize the retro-style of this updo.
3

Section and clip your hair into three areas: your bangs, or the front section of your hair that would constitute bangs if you had them; the crown section that will be used to create the beehive; and the hair you will let hang down.

Create the Beehive

1

Begin with the crown section of the hair that creates the beehive. Use a comb to part this section in three or four horizontal rows -- rows that start at one ear, go over your head and end at the opposite ear. Clip the rows you are not working with to help manage the hair.
2

Start with the row of the crown closest to your face. Comb the hair straight up towards the ceiling. Spray a bit of hairspray at the roots, then take the fine-tooth comb and tease the hair downward. This is also called back-combing or ratting the hair. It creates the bump this is essential to a beehive. Once the first row is teased, lay it forward towards your face and move on to the second row. Repeat this step of combing up, spraying, teasing and laying forward until the three or four rows are complete.
3

Comb the teased sections of hair gently with a wide-tooth comb, down and towards the back of your head. Be careful not to flatten out the volume you've diligently created at the crown. Starting at your temples, use your fingers to pull your hair toward the back center of your head, gathering the teased section as you go. Once your two fingers meet at the back of your head, this becomes the base of the beehive.
4

Use bobby pins to secure the beehive at the base. Don't just slide the bobby pin directly in; instead, lock the hair in place by sliding the bobby pin in halfway, then lift, flip and slide the bobby pin in the rest of the way. If you have any ends spilling out from the pinned pieces, use your fine-tooth comb to smooth and conceal them within the hair hanging down.
5

Pin the front section of your hair into the style you want. If you have bangs or shorter pieces of hair around your face, style this section either parted down the middle and framing your face or swept to the side and bobby pinned behind the ear. If this section is longer, keep your middle part and use your fine-tooth comb to sweep these front sections of hair back towards your ears and bobby pin them above the ears or farther back on your head if they are longer; the intention is for these long front sections to disappear into the half-up beehive. Finish with a final spray of hairspray.
