How to Make Your Own Book Shelf
- 1). Measure the wall space that you intend to use for your bookshelf. Mark each end of the proposed bookshelf on the wall.
- 2). Cut your wood to the length of the space with a saw.
- 3). Place a cinder block on each end of the proposed shelf, using the marks as a guide. Push the cinder blocks all the way against the wall so that they cover the marks.
- 4). Place one piece of wood over the blocks. If the wood sags or does not appear balanced, move one of the blocks over so that the wood is sturdy and level.
- 5). Measure the height of the shelf. Mark the height at each end. Measure the same height and make marks for the second and third shelves. For example, if each shelf is 6 inches high, make marks on each end at 6 inches, 12 inches, and 18 inches.
- 6). Remove the shelf. Cover each mark with an L-shaped bracket and screw the bracket into the wall. Each bracket should be inverted so that it points left. Replace the first shelf so that it sits on the L-shaped brackets.
- 7). Place two blocks on top of the piece of wood, evenly spacing them so that they line up with the blocks on the bottom. Place a piece of wood over them so that it sits on its brackets. Do the same thing for the final set of wood and blocks.
