How to Check the Spark on a 10 HP Briggs & Stratton
- 1). Pull the heavy rubber wire from the top of the sparkplug on the engine.
- 2). Fit the sparkplug wrench over the metal neck of the sparkplug. Turn the wrench in a counterclockwise direction to loosen. Finish removing the sparkplug by hand.
- 3). Inspect the end of the sparkplug that fits inside the engine. If the end is coated in a heavy black-carbon, discard the sparkplug and replace it with a new one.
- 4). Insert the sparkplug back into the heavy rubber wire. Hold the interior engine end of the sparkplug against the metal housing of the engine; near the sparkplug hole. Use the jaws of the needle nose pliers to hold the sparkplug in place.
- 5). Pull on the starter rope several times, observing the interior engine end of the sparkplug. A bright white-blue spark should be discharged with every revolution of the flywheel. If no spark occurs, inspect the heavy rubber wire for breaks in the thick insulation.
