Carmel, CA Study Of Centenarians Could Unlock Clues To Cancer, Heart Disease Prevention: View From A Private Duty Caregiver Serving Carmel, Carmel Valley, Gilroy, Gonzalez, Greenfield, Hollister, King City, Marina, Monterey, Pacific Grove, Pebble Beach, Salinas, San Juan Bautista, Seaside And Soledad California I have been fortunate enough to have multiple clients who are over 100, and a great aunt who has hit the centenarian mark as well. It's quite an achievement and these people have so many interesting stories to tell. I was interested to read that scientists are currently competing in a contest to win $10 million by studying those over 100 to try and find the gene that is the key to longevity. Those looking for the fountain of youth may find that it's not coming from a fountain but rather, it's passed down in your genes. I believe that because my grandmother passed away at 97, her sister is over 100 and many of their siblings lived to a ripe old age. 100 people over 100 from all over the world have agreed to submit their DNA to scientists who will complete their work by October of 2013. Their data will be available to anyone requesting it. There are about a half a million centenarians around the world, but only 53,300 of them are alive in the U.S., according to 2010 U.S. Census data. There is an even rarer group called supercentenarians who are over 110. They occur in about 1 in every 5 million people. The longest anyone has ever lived was to 122 years. Scientists aren't interested in trying to keep people alive longer. Rather, they want to understand the genetic markers of these people to see if there are protective genes which have staved off cancer, heart disease and other ailments. What fascinating work these researchers are doing.http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10000872396390443890304578010513378135692.htmlAbout Richard Kuehn & Family inHome Caregiving:After more than a decade of caregiving, both in a professional environment and for a 97 year old family member I was dissatisfied with service from local caregiving agencies.
