    • 1). Unroll and unfold the inflatable kayak. Make sure that the kayak's top is facing up and that all of the folds are flattened out as much as possible. This will allow you to use the pump to force air into the kayak more quickly and efficiently.

    • 2). Mount any seats or storage compartments before pumping up your kayak. Most seats will clip in to the kayak body, depending on the model. Be sure to follow the manufacturer's instructions explicitly so that your seat does not become loose or undone while you are using your kayak on the water.

    • 3). Insert the pump nozzle into the air intake valve on the kayak. Some models have one air intake valve on either side of the kayak. Pump the kayak until it is plump and full of air. If your pump pulls in air from underneath the pump shaft, make sure that you are not sucking sand, dirt or other debris into the pump. This could damage the pump or get blown into the kayak. Some manufacturers recommend a certain sequence for inflating different air chambers. Consult the owner's manual for your model before inflating your kayak.

    • 4). Remove the pump nozzle from the air intake valve and quickly close the valve by inserting the plug attached to it. Walk around your boat inspect it visually for any folds that did not get properly inflated. Feel your boat for stiffness all the way around and inspect it for any leaks.

    • 5). Let a little air out from the kayak. Once you get on the river or lake, the sun will heat up the kayak's body as well as the air trapped inside, which will cause it to expand. If the air expands too much, this may stretch or warp the fabric of the kayak. In worst cases, it can even cause a leak, which will end your boating expedition quickly.
