How to Clean a Compact Disc Reader
- 1). Open the CD tray on your computer or audio player and unplug it. In most cases, there is a tray that will slide out. Use a can of compressed air and lightly spray around the CD tray and inside the CD reader through the front opening for the tray, to remove all dust particles. Do not use a full blast of air. Only depress the nozzle about halfway; too much forced air can damage the lens.
- 2). Dab a cotton swab in the lubricant and swab the rails of the CD reader, along with the other movable parts that slide out the CD holder. Apply a light coat of oil and do not scrub the parts.
- 3). Dip another cotton swab in ethanol and reach up under the CD opening and swipe the lens a few times. Leave the player open until any excess ethanol evaporates. Swipe the lens gently so you do not damage it.
- 4). Test your CD reader by turning on the unit and inserting a compact disc to see in the reader picks it up. If not, open the CD unit and insert the laser cleaning from your CD reader cleaning kit. Close the CD door and follow the audio instructions for a more thorough cleaning. When finished, remove the laser cleaning disc, wipe it lightly with a lint-free cloth and put in back in its storage case for future use.
