Dangers of Taking Ipecac Syrup
- Ipecac can cause additional serious problems when used to treat some types of poisonings. These include cleaning fluids, kerosene and paint thinner, which are corrosive and should not be brought back up through the esophagus.
- In addition, some types of poisons need to be treated with antidote medication. Taking Ipecac syrup can cause the person to vomit up the essential antidote continually.
- People with eating disorders have been known to abuse Ipecac by taking it chronically. This can cause tearing in the esophagus or stomach lining, serious heart problems, seizures and death.
- Some people may have severe allergic reactions to Ipecac. Signs include rash or hives, difficulty breathing, facial or mouth swelling, and rapid or irregular heartbeat.
- Ipecac can cause repeated vomiting and diarrhea, which can result in dehydration and disrupted electrolyte balance.
- People who take too much Ipecac can overdose. Signs include chest pain, coughing or vomiting blood, dizziness, rapid or irregular heartbeat, seizures and loss of consciousness.
