The Top 3 Distractions That Rob You of Fitness Success
First off, know that the worst distractions are those that seem small and minor.
A phone ringing, a pop-up in a chat window or a text on the phone might only take a minute to address, but they can lead to a chain of actions that might ruin your workout.
So before we set up our defenses we must acknowledge that even small cracks in the wall can bring the whole fort down.
There is no such thing as a small distraction when it comes to a focused workout session.
Let's start with the easiest distractions to clear.
I'm talking about anything that comes from electronic message services.
The easiest thing to do is simply turn off the cell phone, the computer, and even the fax machine if you have one in your home gym.
An unplugged workout is an effective workout and you won't miss having contact with the outside world for 45 minutes or so.
Of course medical pagers or any thing that might notify you of a priority greater than a workout are an exception.
The second biggest distraction is people.
One of the best ways to keep others at bay is to use ear phones.
I've also known some people to also even wear sunglasses while working out.
This can keep you from making eye contact with people who follow up with a 10 minute conversation about their pet Iguana.
If you workout at home a simple sign on the door can let others in the family know that your workout time is your private time and to not disturb you unless it's important.
The third and final distracting element is any kind of entertainment that doesn't motivate you in your workout.
This can include various types of TV, radio, magazines and even music.
I know these elements can be staples for a workout session, but if these things don't get you motivated to push harder, they are simply distracting you from the task at hand.
So select your music and videos so they give you a little spark to push a little bit harder.
If you don't get motivated while watching the news or readying Good House Keeping then move on to something that can bring some more focus to your session.
Other wise it's simply a distraction.
That pretty much covers most of the big distractions that can take you from workout hero to workout zero faster than you can blink.
Remember though that keeping distractions at bay takes a bit of discipline and a hard headed attitude from time to time.
It's not that you're not being friendly; it's simply that you have a job to do and you want to minimize anything in your workout that stands in your way of getting that job done.
