How To Be Successful Working From Your Home

This is a follow up article on, What Is Required For A Successful Home Based Business.

Now it sounds like a good idea to work from your home; have coffee and snack breaks anytime you feel like it. You can work in your pajamas; do you really have to take a shower first thing? I can choose my own hours, this really sounds like the way to go. Work from home, have fun and get paid.

Now for a reality check! First of all ask yourself; do I work for myself or for a company? Either way you will have to produce results or you will not get paid. If you work for a company they will expect at the very least the same amount, or probably more of the work you performed at the office. So the only difference is, you do not physically have to be there. The advantages are many, some have been described above, and others are:

• No traveling time; depending on you commute each way it could add up to a lot.
• Cost of travel, your own transportation or public. If your own you will have wear and tear on you vehicle, maintenance, gas and parking.
• Wardrobe, savings for additional new clothing, shoes etc.
• Possible savings on restaurant meals at lunch time.
• With good time management skills, you will be able to juggle your schedule and spend more time with you family.

What about the disadvantages?

• Self-discipline is the key, you must not get distracted, you must stay focused on the work to be performed and the deadlines that have to be met.
• It could be lonely for some without your work mates to interact with, no more gossip around the water cooler.
• Not always looking your best, and dressing for success.

If you are self employed most of what has been said above will apply with the following exceptions:

• Although you work from your home, you will have to travel and meet with your clients; your customers.
• You will need to purchase the necessary equipment for you office; computer, fax, scanner, blackberry, etc.
• You will be required to have an excellent detailed business plan in order to be successful.
• You will be marketing yourself to your potential customers and possibly outsourcing jobs you do not have time for, or are not your specialty.
• Growing your business and keeping your customers really happy will be a full time, on going commitment.

Whether you are employed and work for a company (one customer) or are self employed and work for several customers, your commitment is the same. Treat the customer as "Royalty" because your livelihood depends upon it! And remember; "People rarely succeed unless they have fun in what they are doing"… Andrew Carnegie
