How Do Toppers Prepare for Olympiad Exams?
I strongly feel that excelling the Olympiad exams is not "a goal" but a means to inculcate "winning habits" in your child.
It is a great milestone to check if your child is making progress in the right direction.
Over the last three years, we has been regularly engaging with the toppers of various Olympiad exams.
The intention is to find out the "common traits / preparation methods" of these top achievers.
The findings are quite interesting and have busted quite a few myths.
When I look back and analyse them, I realize that the feedback from these champions offer much more than Olympiad preparation tips.
They are actually "life skills" with a great attitude.
Following are the four key takeaways: Strong desire: All these toppers without exception had a deep desire to be an Olympiad topper.
They had visualized the Gold medal along with the cash prizes being conferred on them.
They actually experienced beforehand the thunderous applause, the glint of pride in their parents' eyes, the "look of awe" in the eyes of their classmates, the "patting on the back" by the school teachers and the principal.
Personally, I always recommend parents to show videos of these award ceremonies to their children.
They should sow the seeds of strong desire but not force them.
The parent has to invest quality time to make the child experience the sheer pleasure of cracking it.
Putting pressure on the child is counterproductive and defeats the very purpose.
Consistency: Another hallmark of them is that they fixed a particular time each day and stuck to it come what may.
The time allocation ranged between 30 minutes to 1 hour each day and it varied from student to student.
Organized: To ensure maximum effectiveness, the first thing they have done is to have a clear idea about the pattern of questions.
They acquired previous five year question papers.
Also, Identify and carefully choose the right Olympiad preparation tool which would work best for them.
There are many books, DVDs, worksheets, Online courses, Online test series, available today.
Not all of them are ethical and deliver true value Sharpening their Mental Ability skills daily.
They would take one topic, say "number series" and keep doing it for say fifteen minutes daily till they mastered it.
Go beyond the textbook/s to dig deeper into the concepts of being taught in the school.
They would appear for simulated exams regularly.
They took these exams very seriously and ensured that they were not disturbed during this time.
This helped them get into the exam mode.
ASK: Most of them (there were some exceptions) invariably asked their parents / teachers / tutors without any hesitation whenever they had a doubt.
They would move forward only when these doubts were cleared.
We are privileged to have been associated with these winners.
Though we recommended the right Olympiad preparation tool for them, the exemplary attitude and the effort has been solely theirs.
