How to Trim Tall Grasses

    • 1). Cut the grass with a hedge trimmer or scythe to a height of about 5 inches. Remove the long clippings to prevent them from blocking out sunlight and creating a favorable environment for disease. Leave the grass to recover for a week.

    • 2). Set the blades on the lawn mower to the highest level and mow the grass. Leave the short clippings on the lawn to contribute nutrients. Let the grass rest for another week.

    • 3). Lower the blades on the mower slightly and mow the lawn again. Let it rest for another week.

    • 4). Repeat Step 3 until the lawn is as high as you want it. A height of 1 to 2 inches is ideal for warm-season grasses. Keep cool-season grasses longer to reduce stress in the summer.
