How to Claim a Camper on Louisiana Taxes
- 1). Establish Louisiana as your RV domicile, or your home state, while you travel wherever you want with your RV. If you don't have a Louisiana driver's license, visit the state Office of Motor Vehicles to transfer your driver's license from a different state to Louisiana. Purchase your RV and get insurance on it in Louisiana, and get a post office box or change your mailing address to a friend or relative's address in Louisiana.
- 2). Claim a federal tax deduction for your registration fees and sales tax on your RV. If you finance your camper, you should also get a statement of mortgage interest at your Louisiana address. Deduct this interest from your federal and Louisiana taxes as mortgage interest on a second home if you eat and sleep in the camper on a regular basis.
- 3). File your federal and Louisiana taxes before April 15 each year.
