    • 1). Obtain an IRS Form W-7 tax ID number application online, or from an IRS taxpayer assistance center or authorized IRS acceptance agent. (See Resources for W-7 forms and locations of acceptance agents and taxpayer assistance centers.)

    • 2). Type the requested information onto the W-7 form at the online source and print it after completing, or print the form and fill it in as a hard copy with a blue or black ink pen. Include an acceptable form of identification such as a passport, state issued ID or immigration office documents.

    • 3). Mail the completed W-7 tax ID application along with your tax return to:

      Austin Service Center, ITIN operation

      P. O. Box 149342

      Austin, TX, 78714-9342.

Your tax identification number will arrive by mail within six weeks if all the information on the W-7 is correct.

    • 4). Visit an IRS taxpayer assistance center, or an official acceptance agent to receive help in filling out your W-7 form for a tax ID number. An IRS taxpayer assistance center can also provide help in filing your tax return.
