DIY Spa Enclosure

    • 1). Paint all the wood and lattice pieces with weather-seal deck paint, before you assemble the wood structure, and let them dry thoroughly.

    • 2). Measure 8-by-8-feet around the spa and mark four corners.

    • 3). Dig 2 feet deep postholes (or holes as deep as the utility buckets) at all four corners, large enough in diameter to fit the utility buckets. Put a utility bucket into each hole and put a 1/2 inch of pea gravel in the bottom of each bucket.

    • 4). Place a post in each bucket and fill the buckets with cement around the posts, ensuring they are straight and level.

    • 5). Brace each post by screwing a 1-by-1-inch-by 4-feet length of wood horizontally across the front and back three feet from the ground for cross-bracing. Place a 1--by-1-inch-by 3-feet length of wood so that one end sits under each cross-brace and the other end touches the ground, bracing the post in a level position to dry. Let the cement cure for one day.

    • 6). Screw two support boards to the outside of parallel posts 6 inches from the top of the posts and two support boards to the inside of the same posts, also 6 inches from the top. If you are working alone, use the clamps to hold them in place while you are drilling. These are the supports upon which the three 9-feet pieces of trellis will rest.

    • 7). Place the three 9-feet pieces of lattice on top of the support boards, above the spa, and screw them in place.

    • 8). Place an 8-feet piece of lattice on the outside of each corner post and screw them into place to complete the spa enclosure.
