Hair loss in women can be caused by a number of factors. Diet, stress, hormones and weight loss can all lead to excessive shedding. In many cases this hair loss is temporary and will not require treatment; the hair growth cycle will rebalance and normal hair growth will return after 6-12 months. However, some women may find the hair loss is quite severe or triggers Female Pattern (genetic) Hair Loss. In these situations, choosing the right hair loss treatment is important if you do not want to waste time and money on ineffective products.

There is only one product that has undergone large scale clinical trials and been found to be both safe and effective for the treatment of female hair loss. Minoxidil is a topical agent that helps increase the nutrient supply to the scalp and is thought to open the potassium channels which in turn encourages hair growth.

In scientific studies, approximately two-thirds of men and women using Minoxidil experienced hair loss stabilisation or re-growth. It is important to note that the concentration of Minoxidil used can have a significant impact on the level of re-growth. For instance, Minoxidil 5% was shown to be much more effective than Minoxidil 2%.

To get the most of out Minoxidil, there are a range of hair growth booster ingredients that can be added to enhance the treatment. For example, Minoxidil 4% and 5% solutions with added Medroxyprogesterone (MPG). Minoxidil also comes in a 12.5% cream with added Azelaic Acid (AA) which can help particularly stubborn patches of hair loss. MPG and AA may help to reduce the adverse effects of Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) - the hormone that causes the hair follicles to shrivel and leads to thinning hair.

While the lower concentration is often found in high street hair loss products, a higher concentration requires a prescription. Not only does this mean that you are more likely to see the results you are after, but you will also have professional guidance and monitoring while you undergo treatment.

If you decide to see a specialist for advice, then take some time to do some research. Unfortunately the hair loss industry has suffered from a bad image thanks to some unscrupulous companies and their pressurised sales techniques. But don't let this put you off; thousands of women have gone out and sought support for this condition and now successfully manage hair loss. You probably know at least one woman through work or friends without realising it.

A good way of checking that a hair loss specialist is reputable is to look into the company they work for. There should be a website and client comments and photographic results of their treatment progress. A company that can show you video diaries of patients they treat will provide you with more reassurance.

Finally, do be sure to look at the range of hair loss products out there, but remember that many do not do what they say they do. But with the right product and the right support it is possible to treat female hair loss with minimum fuss and maximum results.
