The top-rated campground in the state, according to Touring Michigan, is one that is located on Lake Michigan. The campground features more than five miles of sandy beaches on the lake for boating, fishing and swimming. Another top campground in Michigan stretches for more than 50 miles along the Ausable River near Oscoda. - Featuring almost 400 campsites on Lake Michigan, Ludington State Park has sites for tents and RVs with electric and water connections. The park covers more than 5,000 acres on Lake Michigan and Hamlin Lake. Campers at Ludington State Park can participate in boating, fishing and swimming activities on the lakes surrounding the park. Amenities at the park include bath and shower facilities, hiking, mountain biking and snow skiing trails. Ludington State Park also has wildlife viewing areas and a visitor's center. The park has sandy beaches on Lake Michigan for picnics and swimming access.

dnr.state.mi.us - Camping along the Ausable River in Oscoda is managed by the state of Michigan. The Ausable River Primitive Camping area covers almost 60 miles along the Ausable River and it features more than 100 campsites. The campsites do not offer any electric, water or sewer connections. From May through September, camping in the Ausable River Primitive Camping area is only allowed through reservations. Camping is available the rest of the year on a first-come, first-served basis. Campsites along the Ausable River offer campers activities like boating, fishing and swimming. Campsites offer portable toilets, but no showers.

recreation.gov - Shoepac Lake State Forest Campground is small, but there are a variety of outdoor activities in and around Shoepac Lake for campers. The campground features 28 campsites that can accommodate tents and smaller RVs and trailers. The sites do not have any electric or water connections. Shoepac Lake State Forest Campground does include portable toilets. Activities at the campground include boating, fishing, swimming, hiking, mountain biking and cross-country skiing. One hiking and mountain biking trail runs for 80 miles.
