How to Go Green at Work
- 1). Remember that the more energy that is used, the more global warming will be impacted by its production. Make a point of turning out anything electric when they are not being used, and encourage your coworkers to do the same. That means lights, computers or machinery of all kinds.
- 2). Talk with your employer about allowing you and other employees to occasionally work from home. Studies show that telecommuters are happier and more productive when they aren’t distracted by telephones and other interruptions in the workplace. Besides, they won’t use fuel going to and from work, nor will they add to the company’s energy usage.
- 3). Consider the benefits of real plants if your office is adorned with artificial plants and flowers. While they will need occasional pruning and water, real plants emit oxygen while taking in carbon dioxide, a process that is healthy both for employees and the planet.
- 4). Consider designating one person each day to make the lunch run. Rotate the job so it won’t be a burden. By doing this, you’ll avoid multiple trips, thus saving gasoline and its pollution.
- 5). Talk to your company about converting from desktop computers to laptops. They use about a quarter of the electricity and they operate much cooler, thus reducing the company’s air conditioning costs.
- 6). Lower the temperature of your office during the winter, and raise it in the summer. By altering the temperature by only one degree, the company will save approximately 6% of its cost to heat and cool the facilities.
