Here are a few tips to make moving a simple process.

Choose a reputable moving company

There are many options out there for moving. You can do it all yourself by packing your own items and renting a moving truck or using a friend's truck, or you can go the professional route and hire movers or have your items shipped. No matter what you choose, it is important that you choose a reputable company. These days, you can do a lot of research on the Internet. Search out companies you are interested in on Yelp and also with the Better Business Bureau (BBB) to see what customers are saying about them. Many people feel the cost of a professional moving company is out-of-reach, but call them for a quote anyway. You may be surprised when you factor in gas costs, insurance and truck rental, that movers are not too far off from the cost of renting a truck yourself. And you also have the peace of mind that everything will be taken care of for you.

Pack your stuff (or have someone else pack it for you)

There are many tips and tricks to get your stuff packed in the quickest and safest way. Whatever you do, do not just throw your stuff in a box and hope for the best. Items shift while they are moved, so it is important to wrap fragile items. You can purchase a large roll of bubble wrap at your local Home Depot, or call in the professionals. They will wrap everything for you, from the smallest trinket to your furniture to insure its protection.

Other packing tips include using different color markers to label boxes for different rooms. For example, the kitchen boxes could be labeled with a red marker, while living room boxes are blue. It is also very helpful to pack like items with each other. It can be tempting to give up toward the end of packing and throw things into boxes, but you will be sorry you did that at unpacking time.
Get your affairs in order

Your life will be so much easier if you leave one house in good condition and ready for the new occupants. Leave all important paperwork for the house along with owner's manuals for appliances, etc. in a folder. Leave a paper with your moving address so the new occupants can forward any stray mail.
If you are moving out-of-state, make sure you switch all of your doctor records, have veterinarian records sent and have school records forwarded for your children. It is easiest to ask your current doctors and dentists if they have

Set up your utilities. Many of this information can now be found online, or you can request a packet from the Chamber of Commerce of your town. Here you will find information about public utility services, voter registration, car and license information and much more.

When you arrive at your new home, make sure all of your utilities are turned on. Check all appliances and make sure everything is working properly. If you did go with a professional moving company, plan to be there when they arrive and map out where you would like to unload everything
Save all of your moving receipts for tax time as potential write offs.

Moving can be a stressful time, but if you follow these few simple tips, you can make the transition easily and smoothly.
