    • 1). Fill a zippered storage bag half full of ice. Wrap the outside of the bag with a dry washcloth or a hand towel.

    • 2). Lift the bruised area above your heart to reduce the blood flow to the injury. This may not be possible if the bruise is in an odd place.

    • 3). Place the cooling bag on the bruised area. Leave the bag on the bruise for ½ to 1 hour at a time. Do this several times a day for the first day. Ice treatments will not help much if not used immediately. Ice reduces the swelling.

    • 4). Apply a lotion or cream containing arnica montana to the bruised area. This herbal ingredient reduces inflammation. You can use arnica successfully even a day or two after a bruise appears. Arnica cream can be purchased at a health-food store.

    • 5). Take a vitamin C supplement twice a day or according to the product directions. Vitamin C boosts collagen, a natural skin healer.
