- Turmeric is the rhizome, or root, of the tropical ginger plant. It contains curcumin, which has numerous medicinal properties. Curcumin is known as an anti-inflammatory and an antioxidant. Though curcumin is renowned for its healing properties, it is an iron chelator and might cause iron deficiency in patients with low iron reserves. As with any supplement, consult a physician before including turmeric in your diet.
- Turmeric has been used throughout Asia as a medicine for centuries. The spice is commonly used to purify the blood of toxins and detoxify the liver, but other healing properties have been attributed to turmeric. It is thought to be a remedy for epilepsy and certain skin disorders, an antiseptic for wounds and to aid in digestion.
