Logitech Revue Google TV Price Drops from 249 to 99 Dollars
Logitech has dropped the price of its Google TV set-top box, the Logitech Revue, from $249 to $99 effective July 31. In a Logitech company earnings conference call on July 28th, Logitech Chairman, Guerrino de Luca explained that there was a gap between the price of the Logitech Revue and the customer's perceived value, saying: "I felt it was critical that we eliminate the gap by lowering the price and making it easier for the consumer to focus on what I believe is an attractive value proposition."
Google TV has been plagued with obstacles, including a confusing operating system. When the promise of playing video on its Chrome web browser was given the kibosh by the major TV networks, Hulu and other streaming sites, it left customers questioning the advantages of Google TV that would warrant its original $299 price tag (for more details read a review of the Logitech Revue Google TV Box).
Guerrino also said that while mistakes were made in the rollout of the Logitech Revue, "Engaging with Google was the right thing to do. It allowed us to build a strong relationship with the technology leader, which promises to bear more fruits down the road and to develop a thorough understanding of the emerging smart TV market."
This Does Not Foretell the End of Google TV
While a price drop often precedes a product's path to oblivion, Logitech's press email tells a different story:
"Stay tuned: With the expected release of Version 2 (V2) of Google TV later this summer, the Logitech Revue connected-TV experience should get even richer.
When V2 goes live, all new and existing Logitech Revue users will automatically receive the updated version, built on Android 3.1. Among other benefits, V2 will offer a simplified user experience and access to the Android Market."
We'll keep you posted as soon as Google Version 2 appears on Google TV.
